چکیده
Abstract Post-truth politics has been diagnosed as harmful to both knowledge and democracy. I argue that it can also fundamentally undermine epistemic autonomy in a way is similar the manipulative technique known gaslighting. Using examples from contemporary politics, identify three categories of post-truth rhetoric: introduction counternarratives, discrediting critics, denial more or less plain facts. These strategies tend isolate people epistemically, leaving them disoriented unable distinguish between reliable unreliable sources. Like gaslighting, aims by eroding someone's self-trust, order consolidate power. Shifting focus effects on victim allows for new insights into specific harms politics. Applying concept gaslighting this domain may help recognize pernicious dynamic was invisible before, giving an important tool resist it.

1 HERE are social practices and virtues which, if we are to characterize them, require us to mention the truth. This is not the same as mentioning what other people hold true (their beliefs), or just mentioning what we regard as true (our own beliefs). We may contrast in this respect two different virtues of truth, which may be labeled sincerity and accuracy. Sincerity (at the most basic level)...

The choice to not study ‘actual use’ of feedback in clinical practice seems to me to be a flaw in research design, an inevitable consequence of which is that the study report is peppered with use of the conditional tense—‘would’ and ‘could’. In situating the study’s results in the world of the possible and not the actual, the authors mirror the common medical education practice of learning thro...

As it has in the past, Peruvian politics defied regional trends in the 1990s. Whereas democracy either took hold (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay) or at least survived (Colombia, Ecuador, Nicaragua) throughout most of Latin America, it collapsed in Peru. That collapse took place on 5 April 1992, when President Alberto Fujimori, in a military-backed autogolpe (self-coup), closed the Congress, suspend...

In this commentary, we review the growth of populist politics, associated with exploitation of what has been termed fake news. We explore how certain words have been used in similar contexts historically, in particular the term “enemy of the people,” especially with regard to public health. We then set out 6 principles for public health professionals faced with these situations. First, using th...
